All research

Research Question:
My research topic is based upon the prevention of football injuries that will ultimately lengthen a football player’s life. These are my books.

The Prevent-System for Football Injuries

1) Cerney, J. V. The Prevent-system for Football Injuries. Englewood Cliffs, N.J.: Prentice-Hall, 1976. Print.

This book goes into detail about the many ways to help prevent injuries that occur during football. Some of these ways could be gaining knowledge about the positions and the game itself or being active in daily conditioning. Conditioning is when a person/athlete performs strenuous exercises to help them get in shape for something, such as a sport. I could use this book to explain the multiple ways injuries can be prevented, so that no long term effects will occur on the athlete.

Sports Injuries: Their Prevention and Treatment

2) Featherstone, Donald F. Sports Injuries: Their Prevention and Treatment. Bristol [Eng.]: J. Wright, 1957. Print.

This book is more broad than the one prior, which is beneficial because I can compare each different prevention method for each different sports injury. The other book does not talk about any treatments, as this one does, so there is more of a variety. I can use this to understand and explain the differences between the two.

Articles

I found one article already on how to prevent ACL injuries:

1) Bing Yu, et al. "Prevention Of ACL Injury, Part II: Effects Of ACL Injury Prevention Programs On Neuromuscular Risk Factors And Injury Rate." Research In Sports Medicine 20.3/4 (2012): 198-222. SPORTDiscus. Web. 5 Oct. 2012.

This article explains the many different tactics on how to reduce the risk of injuring the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Such tactics include multi-component training and injury education. This is similar to one of the books I cited last week in that it pretty much says athletes should get educated and condition. Unlike one of my other cited books, this article is regarding current issues of ACL injuries. I could use this article to, of course, bring attention to prevention methods of a specific injury, such as the ACL. This article is roughly 25 pages, so it should give me plenty of detail to help me in my research.

Another source I found was a brief article on the latest research of sports injuries for soccer players:

2) Kirkendall, D. "The Latest News: An Overview Of Some Of The Most Recent Soccer Related Professional Research." Soccer Journal 48.3 (2003): 14-15. SPORTDiscus. Web. 5 Oct. 2012.

This article goes into detail about body size, maturity of the youth, differences between gender, etc. It has studies from different countries, which gives it more of a variety. Even though it’s much shorter than the previous article and I can only get so much from it, it still gives me a better understanding of how sports can affect an athlete. In a way it’s much more specific, because it is based on injuries from soccer, not just any sport.

My original research question was, “What types of prevention methods can help reduce injury and lengthen a football player’s life?” Now that I’ve begun to do more research on it, I decided to make it more of an argument-based research assignment. This way I can go into more depth on the overall topic. My new question is, “Which prevention method proves to be the most effective in lengthening an athlete’s life?” With this new question, I can still explain all the ways of preventions, but I can also state my opinion on which one I believe is more efficient. I will provide the answer as to which one really is more effective as well. I also changed from specific to more broad, because I can compare different athletes from different sports. Referring to my argument, I feel as if conditioning is the ultimate way to prevent injury in leg muscles, arm muscles, etc., because it helps strengthen the athlete. Add a little stretching in there, and that doubles the positive effects. I also feel that maybe more protective gear could be worn.  I’m obviously going to be using a few of my previous sources to explain the different methods of prevention, but I may decide to look further. I’ve been thinking about finding some recent news stories, if any, and using those to help aid my argument. The books and articles I already found are a great start. I can’t wait to see how this all turns out.
