My Grading Rubric 11/30/12

For my grading rubric, I went the traditional way. I looked at examples of my daughter’s grading rubrics she has for her school and thought of how mine have been set up in the past. I also added a bit more to really reflect what I feel presentations should amount to. I also made this rubric based on how I feel when someone is presenting an assignment. I don’t want to be bored and I don’t want to see a lot of errors. I want to view someone’s assignment positively as I know mine will be. I want to enjoy the information they present to me instead of sitting there critiquing them in my mind.

-Content focused on the assigned topic and persuasive purpose by using consistent and accurate data.
-A variety of sources were used and helped to develop a visual to the audience.

Annotated Bibliographies

An annotated bibliography is just like a regular bibliography, except each source is summarized. The length of each annotation depends on the topic and requirements from your class, instructor, school, etc. Some could be just a few sentences, or some could be like a page long. Like I said, it just depends on what your teacher or school wants you to do. It’s good to write annotated bibliographies for our class, so that the audience knows where we got certain information and how it pertains to our overall topic. It lets them know that we didn’t just make up the stuff as we went along. Annotations bring about clarity, which in turn, helps our instructor grade us more accurately. This can help our grade as well. Doing annotated bibliographies will also help the student or group understand their topic more. Student won’t have to keep referring back to each source as much, since the sources will be summarized in their bibliographies. In a way, it makes things easier, not only for the students but the instructors as well. I’ve never written one before, so I’m not sure if mine will be exactly right, but I think I’ll do fine. I have an overall idea of what it’s supposed to be like.

Research portfolio 11/5

The first website I found was a very broad website called Stop Sports Injuries. It contains information about all types of injuries athletes could encounter. With these many types come many different prevention methods. With this website I can compare all the different methods and come to my conclusion that conditioning is the most effective. Even though it’s not specific on my argument, it gives the reader a sense of understanding. 1) Owens, Brett D., MD, and William N. Levine, MD. "Become an Advocate for Sports Safety." Football Injuries. STOPSportsInjuries.org, 2012. Web. 07 Nov. 2012. <http://www.stopsportsinjuries.org/football-injury-prevention.aspx>. The second website I found is more specific and pertains to ACL injuries and how to prevent those. Conditioning plays a major role in preventing this type of injury. The information on this website tells the reader that different training drills for conditioning helps improve muscle reactions and shows a decrease in the ACL injuries. It also goes into depth of preventing injuries depending on gender. I could use this website to back up my argument that conditioning is the sure way to promise a healthy body in the future. 2) Quinn, Elizabeth. "ACL Injury Prevention Tips For Athletes." All research

Research Question:
My research topic is based upon the prevention of football injuries that will ultimately lengthen a football player’s life. These are my books.

The Prevent-System for Football Injuries

1) Cerney, J. V. The Prevent-system for Football Injuries. Englewood Cliffs, N.J.: Prentice-Hall, 1976. Print.

This book goes into detail about the many ways to help prevent injuries that occur during football. Some of these ways could be gaining knowledge about the positions and the game itself or being active in daily conditioning. Conditioning is when a person/athlete performs strenuous exercises to help them get in shape for something, such as a sport. I could use this book to explain the multiple ways injuries can be prevented, so that no long term effects will occur on the athlete.

Sports Injuries: Their Prevention and Treatment

2) Featherstone, Donald F. Sports Injuries: Their Prevention and Treatment. Bristol [Eng.]: J. Wright, 1957. Print.

This book is more broad than the one prior, which is beneficial because I can compare each different prevention method for each different sports injury. The other book does not talk about any treatments, as this one does, so there is more of a variety. I can use this to understand and explain the differences between the two.

Articles

I found one article already on how to prevent ACL injuries:

1) Bing Yu, et al. "Prevention Of ACL Injury, Part II: Effects Of ACL Injury Prevention Programs On Neuromuscular Risk Factors And Injury Rate." Research In Sports Medicine 20.3/4 (2012): 198-222. SPORTDiscus. Web. 5 Oct. 2012.

This article explains the many different tactics on how to reduce the risk of injuring the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Such tactics include multi-component training and injury education. This is similar to one of the books I cited last week in that it pretty much says athletes should get educated and condition. Unlike one of my other cited books, this article is regarding current issues of ACL injuries. I could use this article to, of course, bring attention to prevention methods of a specific injury, such as the ACL. This article is roughly 25 pages, so it should give me plenty of detail to help me in my research.

Another source I found was a brief article on the latest research of sports injuries for soccer players:

2) Kirkendall, D. "The Latest News: An Overview Of Some Of The Most Recent Soccer Related Professional Research." Soccer Journal 48.3 (2003): 14-15. SPORTDiscus. Web. 5 Oct. 2012.

This article goes into detail about body size, maturity of the youth, differences between gender, etc. It has studies from different countries, which gives it more of a variety. Even though it’s much shorter than the previous article and I can only get so much from it, it still gives me a better understanding of how sports can affect an athlete. In a way it’s much more specific, because it is based on injuries from soccer, not just any sport.

 ............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

My original research question was, “What types of prevention methods can help reduce injury and lengthen a football player’s life?” Now that I’ve begun to do more research on it, I decided to make it more of an argument-based research assignment. This way I can go into more depth on the overall topic. My new question is, “Which prevention method proves to be the most effective in lengthening an athlete’s life?” With this new question, I can still explain all the ways of preventions, but I can also state my opinion on which one I believe is more efficient. I will provide the answer as to which one really is more effective as well. I also changed from specific to more broad, because I can compare different athletes from different sports. Referring to my argument, I feel as if conditioning is the ultimate way to prevent injury in leg muscles, arm muscles, etc., because it helps strengthen the athlete. Add a little stretching in there, and that doubles the positive effects. I also feel that maybe more protective gear could be worn.  I’m obviously going to be using a few of my previous sources to explain the different methods of prevention, but I may decide to look further. I’ve been thinking about finding some recent news stories, if any, and using those to help aid my argument. The books and articles I already found are a great start. I can’t wait to see how this all turns out.

Research Portfolio 10/31/12

Halftime Show of the Orange Bowl Football Game: Miami, Florida

For my research I could use a simple football picture such as the one I found on Flickr Commons. It is of a halftime show in Orange County. 1) State Library and Archives of Florida. Halftime Show of the Orange Bowl Football Game: Miami, Florida. 1950. State Library and Archives of Florida, Tallahassee. Flickr. Web. 03 November 2012. An additional source I could use for my research would be a recent article involving a sports injury, specifically football. In my group research project I’m going to be using Marcus Lattimore as an example for my slides in the PowerPoint. Last weekend on October 27th, Marcus Lattimore, running back for South Carolina suffered a gruesome knee injury. He dislocated his knee and tore many ligaments. Luckily, there were no broken bones. According to the South Carolina team doctor, he should be able to pursue his football career. Not only could I use this article, but I could embed a video of the accident to show the class how the injury happened. It would definitely support my argument of preventing injuries, such as these. 2) Watson, Graham. “South Carolina’s Marcus Lattimore diagnosed with a dislocated knee.” Yahoo! Sports. Yahoo! Inc. n.d. 2012. Web. 3 November 2012.
